Two supernatural beings find themselves in early 1900s Brooklyn. They're not human, they don't quite understand the way humans work or think, and they couldn't be more different from each other. But they find camaraderie in their shared longing and restlessness. This book gripped me so severely, I held it to my chest when it was over. I haven't felt so strongly that I didn't want something to end in a long time. A lot of insight into the lives of Jewish families and Syrian immigrants in early Brooklyn, and a lot of wonderful characters with vastly contrasting opinions. I somehow found myself empathetic towards even the antagonist. recommended? 1000% !! So many interesting characters whose lives intertwine in incredible and terrifying ways! it dives into the Golem's desire to serve and how it contrasts her life without a master; the Jinni's loss of freedom and struggle to understand what fulfills him; and how they both change each other for the worse and the better. I am screaming.
A young German girl survives the Spanish Flu in 1918 and finds herself orphaned and separated from her infant brothers, while a woman who's just lost her only child to the flu embarks on a grief-stricken crusade against those making life harder for "real Americans". Interestingly, this book was published just before the the COVID-19 lockdowns hit America. Seeing the unintentional parallels between the massive death tolls, overworked healthcare systems, the effects of prejudice, and the ease at which unprotected children fall through the cracks was jarring. recommended? Absolutely! made me angry and relieved in many ways, and reminded me of how important it is for us to help each other.
Sequel to John Dies at the End, a book i've never read. An unseeable, otherworldy horror takes over a small town in the most gruesome way possible, while a pair of jackasses hold the fate of humanity in their stupid, idiot hands. Fun and interesting, full of hilarious transitions from scene to scene while you wonder if the main characters can get their shit together long enough to not get killed by spider monsters. Very good at building suspense, very casual with its brutal horrors. I probably would like to read the first book. somehow i feel like i didn't miss out on much, but theres more fun to be had. recommended? sure! not if youre squeamish, though.
